Take of turtles: methods

Background

Under DGIF regulation section 4VAC15-350-60, the use of set poles and other "hook and line" methods are permitted for the take of turtles. This implies that all species of turtle may be taken with some form of "hook and line". However, only the snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) may be harvested via "hook and line" for recreational purposes with a valid Virginia freshwater fishing license. All other species of turtle can only be taken by hand for live personal use.

Staff is considering the following to address this issue:

  • Modify language in DGIF regulation section 4VAC15-360-60 to specify that only snapping turtles may be taken with "hook and line" methods.
