Nonnative (exotic) species

There are several species of nonnative (exotic) fish that have been introduced to Virginia waters over the years. Tracking of these species is vital as prohibiting their introduction can help prevent severe ecological impacts.

Staff is considering the following to address this issue:

  • Add the Oriental Weatherfish (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) to the list of nonnative (exotic) species in the Commonwealth. This species is available through the pet industry as an aquarium fish and, if released, has the potential to spread quickly and compete with native fish.
